Depending on whether you’re a movie connoisseur or not, the amount of money you’ll spend for your home theater can easily be under $300 for a home theater in a box. But if you’re willing to go all out then the sky’s your limit because there are many things you can do to make your home theater like a real theater indeed!

Space – Do you have one whole room to dedicate to your home theater? Can you afford to deck it out in proper home theater style?

Image Quality – You don’t need a huge theater-size TV because a projector can easily give you a theater-size screen even with a moderate size TV. But if you don’t want to use a projector then just make sure that you buy an HDTV for better image quality. Look for one that can also allow you to adjust every image feature like color, brightness, sharpness, and contrast.

Sounds – Audio is usually considered the lifeblood of a home theater system. A home theater system with mediocre image and great sound can still create an astounding experience, but great image quality and poor sound will easily ruin the illusion of watching in a real honest-to-goodness movie theater.

For sound, you'll need at least one receiver, subwoofer, and a center channel speaker. You'll also need at least one pair of front and surround sound speakers. It’s important that all corners of your room have sound coming out from them to solidify your home theater experience.

It’s harder to choose the right components for sounds rather than for the visual aspect of your home theater. If you can’t say you’ve got an excellent ear with confidence, find a friend who can help you make the right choices.

Player – If you’re going to think long-term, it’s best that you replace your old DVD player with a new player that can play both HD and Blu-Ray discs.

Home Theater Accessories – The seats in your home theater must be comfortable. It doesn’t have to be La-Z-Boy quality, but it should at least have high backs, arm rests, and padded all over. Choose curtains wisely. They must be dark colored and able to cover the windows thoroughly. Use a dimmer for light control. Install carpeting if possible so that footsteps can be muted. Walls must be soundproof if possible so as not to disrupt the rest of the house.
